Adding shadow inside the boat today
Zoom in on this afternoon's work.
Taking a break now, will probably work again in about half an hour or so.

How does a girl go about painting still water without it looking like the boat is dry...

looking good, for the water : If your working from a printed photo you can mix and put a test brushstroke on the photo or saran wrap over the photo if its precious. hope this helps..?.

The photo's on the compy, so I've just been eyeing it. I noticed my water area is a little too green but I can paint over it.

Really been debating, do I keep using the smallish-medium brushes and drive myself nuts on detail, or do I grab my big round brush and just have at it and see what happens.

I can tell you great advice that I got from Colin Page, "keep the paint thin and dry (not loose)for as long as possible" this (when i remember it) helps me stay in control of whats winning the battle for my eyes attention for alot longer then it used to, and it lets me finish paintings in one session. hope this is of some help..?.

I'll try that, I'm letting it dry right now before I work on it some more next week sometime. Gives me time to decide how to approach it.

Looks good so far! Watching closely to see how you manage the water... esp the reflections.
